About 10 miles southeast of Galena, turn south on Illinois Highway 84. You're bound for Fulton, a quiet town on theMississippi that rewards the visitor with history, a nature trail and a tribute to the town's Dutch heritage. After about an hour, turn west on Illinois Highway 136. You will see shops, restaurants and gas stations—then suddenly come face to face with Fulton's authentic 90-foot-tall Dutch windmill, De Immigrant.
The windmill was fashioned in the Netherlands, then shipped to Fulton, where it was assembled with the help of Dutch craftsmen and masons. It's a working mill that grinds grain. Stone-ground flour is available for sale in the gift shop, and volunteers are there to explain how the low tech still works.
